On February 22, friends from across the Diocese of Long Island gathered at the Cathedral of the Incarnation for the annual celebration of Blessed Absalom Jones, the first Black priest in the Episcopal Church. The service was a moving tribute filled with joy, song, and praise, celebrating Jones' enduring legacy of faith, justice, and perseverance.
The Right Reverend Lawrence C. Provenzano, Bishop of the Diocese of Long Island, presided over the service, and the Rev. Cn. Dr. Donald Kortright Davis, Professor of Theology at Howard University, delivered a powerful sermon. In his message, Canon Davis reminded us that in facing the challenges of today’s world, we must "go forth with a compassionate heart, collaborative mind, creative imagination, and courageous spirit."
A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the prestigious Dean’s Cross for Distinguished Service to Canon Davis by the Very Rev. Michael Sniffen, Dean of the Cathedral of the Incarnation. This honor recognizes Canon Davis’ profound contributions to theology, ministry, and the wider church.
The music for the service, directed by Quincy Dover, featured a number of spirituals and hymns. The special combined choir and musicians led the congregation in stirring renditions of "Blessed Absalom," "Lift Every Voice and Sing," "Oh Freedom," and the offertory anthem, "Elijah Rock," arranged by Moses Hogan.
