On Sunday, November 3rd, the Cathedral of the Incarnation marked All Saints Day with a beautifully moving Evensong service, a highlight of which was the presentation of the portrait of the Rt. Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano, Eighth Bishop of Long Island. This deeply significant portrait was painted by Bishop Provenzano’s son, Chris Provenzano, a Brooklyn-based artist.
The service, under the musical direction of Canon Lawrence M. Tremsky, Canon Musician, featured an array of powerful choral works performed by the Cathedral Choir. Among the musical selections were Herbert Sumsion’s Magnificat & Nunc dimittis in G and Edgar Bainton’s And I saw a new heaven. The evening also included the debut performance of a new setting of the Preces & Responses, composed by Canon Tremsky himself. Inspired by the music of Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, this piece was composed during Canon Tremsky’s summer travels in Lviv, Ukraine, lending it an especially meaningful connection to the themes of hope and resilience.
With the cathedral filled with resonant voices and reverent attendees, this special Evensong for All Saints Day brought together the sacred and the artistic, honoring the legacy of Bishop Provenzano and the deep connections between family, faith, and creativity.
