Statement from Bishop Provenzano on Supreme Court Rulings

Diocese of Long Island

My Fellow Disciples,

The Supreme Court decision released today (Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization), reversing the 1973 case Roe v. Wade comes one day after its decision on NYSRPA v. Bruen to overturn New York’s restrictions—in place since 1913— on carrying concealed weapons in public. We are left reeling and fearful even if we knew these decisions were coming.

On top of this, we have received information from federal authorities of credible security threats against clergy and churches around the release of today’s decision, particularly to congregations and clergy who are vocal in support of reproductive rights. I still encourage us all to be courageous and peaceful in our responses in the coming weeks, while remaining vigilant.

Even in the midst of this uncertainty, we are called to prayer and action. As a place to begin, I invite you to read through the statements below from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, including the links regarding The Episcopal Church’s historic positions on reproductive rights, as well as resources provided by the Episcopal Public Policy Network. I have also included two prayers I especially appreciate in times of uncertainty.

In the meantime, women, whether they are members of our church or not, should know that our church will provide support in whatever forms are available to us.

And finally, if you, as leaders within our diocese, are participating in actions and would like us to help spread the word, please contact Mo. Marie Tatro, Vicar for Community Justice Ministry by email: mtatro@dioceseli.org.

In the comforting strength of our Savior, Jesus Christ,

When evil darkens our world, give us light. When despair numbs our souls, give us hope. When we stumble and fall, lift us up. When doubts assail us, give us faith. When nothing seems sure, give us trust. When ideals fade, give us vision. When we lose our way, be our guide! That we may find serenity in Your presence, and purpose in doing Your will.

John D. Rayner

God, you are my help and comfort; you shelter and surround me in love so tender that I may know your presence with me, now and always. Amen.
