Open Doors New Futures: Interim Clergy Handbook

Open Doors New Futures - Interim Clergy Handbook
Posted by Teddy Byrne

The Interim Clergy Handbook is for clergy who will be accompanying the congregation through their clergy vacancy. The Interim Clergy Handbook is a detailed guide for areas that need particular attention during the interim time. Particular attention is given to the development of spiritual discernment skills, both to discern the call in the Clergy Search, and in preparation for the whole congregation to discern God’s leading in the Mission Search. The Six Developmental Tasks of the Interim period are the backbone of the work, and the Interim Clergy determine which objectives under each Developmental Task should be undertaken. By no means is it expected that every objective will be met. Cover what is most needed and life-giving to authentically address the needs of the congregation’s development as it moves towards a new call. There are many tools provided to assist in addressing difficulties and elevating people’s experience of God’s presence, leading, healing and encouraging. It is expected that the Interim Clergy will work in partnership with Bishop’s Staff, the Vestry, congregation, and the Consultant.

If no Interim Clergy is called to assist during a congregation’s Clergy Search, and they are covered by Lay leadership or Sunday supply clergy, it is highly recommended to seek Diocese staff, a Dean, or other person to lead the congregation in discernment skill acquisition and practice. Everything needed is available in the Interim Clergy Handbook. Having an outside leader’s voice is helpful for congregations to ask new questions and hear things in a new or helpful way as they move towards a call.
